How To Stay Empowered (And Focused) As An Entrepreneur

Uncategorized Jun 21, 2020

I often describe my entrepreneurial journey as a Six Flags roller coaster: a slow climb to the top quickly followed by a crazy fast downturn - sometimes flying upside down, going through loop the loops, and then another slow climb to a peak hahaha can anyone else relate?

While I have definitely achieved a lot of success, I have also had to overcome my fair share of challenges and learned some pretty big lessons along the way (more about those another time).

Thrive Global asked entrepreneurs to share their thoughts on empowerment, the advice they’d offer up-and-comers, the resources they rely on, and the brands they love. Here’s our Q&A:

What does it mean to feel "empowered"?

For me, empowerment comes hand in hand with confidence, ownership and freedom. When I feel empowered, I absolutely do my best work. I have the confidence to step up to any plate, make informed decisions, take necessary risks and face any challenge head-on.

What makes you feel empowered?

As an Event Producer, I love nothing more than when a client says, “Mel, here is the budget, create me some Mel-Factor Magic!”

When a client shows that level of confidence in my ability to elevate their brand, amplify their message, launch a conference or transform their struggling event into an extraordinary must-attend experience, you better believe I am going to create an experience that is going to knock their socks off.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer other entrepreneurs?

While it’s not ‘my’ advice per se, there are two quotes that I live by:

  1. Be humble. Be hungry. And always be the hardest worker in the room.” - Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
  2. “Be nice to people on your way up because you'll meet them on your way down.” - Wilson Mizner

Each of these captures the same sentiment: work hard but know that there are always going to be others who know more than you. Learn from them, and then pass that knowledge onto others as you rise. Then you won’t just be successful in business, but also in life.

What is one FREE tool or resource that has helped you achieve success?

When I’m feeling overwhelmed or lost, I turn to my mentor - although she doesn’t know it - Rachel Hollis. Rachel has hundreds of YouTube videos that provide the motivation (aka the swift kick in the butt) I need to refocus and come back fighting.
